I can help you with this area if you can get to me for lessons. Here are some ideas:

  • Approach a scale-tone in your solo from a non-scale-tone a semi-tone away from it.
  • Learn to start a phrase on any of the 8 quaver-beats of a 4/4 bar.
  • Leave plenty of quaver or semi-quaver rests in your phrases.
  • Do not limit yourself to intervals of a major third or less - learn to play intervals of a fourth up to a major ninth. If you don't understand this sentence you need to inform yourself about intervals.
  • Repeat notes: don't always follow a note by a different note.
  • Remember what you just played and build on it.
  • Learn to play triplet phrasing.
